The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based
satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all
weather, anywhere on or near the Earth, where there is an unobstructed line of
sight to four or more GPS satellites. It is maintained by the United States
government and is freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver.
The GPS program provides critical capabilities to
military, civil and commercial users around the world. In addition, GPS is the
backbone for modernizing the global air traffic system.
A satellite navigation or SAT NAV system is a system
of satellites that provide autonomous geo-spatial positioning with global
coverage. It allows small electronic receivers to determine their location
(longitude, latitude, and altitude) to within a few metres using time signals
transmitted along a line-of-sight by radio from satellites. Receivers calculate
the precise time as well as position, which can be used as a reference for
scientific experiments. A satellite navigation system with global coverage may
be termed a global navigation satellite system or GNSS
